Abstract

The phenomenon of code-switching is a common thing that happened in bilingual countries such as Indonesia. It is not only occurred in a daily conversation, but also in the learning process. Based on the phenomena, this study aimed to analyze the type and functions of code-switching used by teachers in bilingual classes at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surabaya. It is one of schools in Surabaya that has international class program. There, they use both English and bahasa Indonesia in delivering the subjects. There are two teachers that being observed in this study, mathematic and biology teachers. The data obtained from direct observation, direct interview, and also note-taking process. After analyzing the data, there are two types of codeswitching that occurred in the learning process. They are metaphorical codeswitching and situational code-switching. In total, metaphorical code-switching occurred 25 times and situational code-switching occurred 51 times. The dominance of situational code-switching signed that both teachers are aware of their use of codeswitching. There are five functions of code-switching appeared during the learning process. They are repetitive function, socializing function, topic switch, affective function, and linguistic insecurity. Repetitive function is the most dominant type among other types. The dominance of repetitive function signed that both teachers wanted the learning process to be more effective and clearer to the students.
