Abstract

The ability to acquire more than one language or called as bilingualism, leads people to use more than one language to communicate with others. This phenomenon is known as code switching. The reasons why people do code switching are vary, can be social factors and social dimensions. This phenomenon also happened in the Dangdut Academy Asia 2, a music competition, held in Indonesia, participated by 36 contestants from six different countries in Asia, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, and Timor Leste. Because of the different languages owned by participants, all contestants, commentators, host, judges, and even audiences, code switching happened during the show. Moreover, Ivan Gunawan, one of the commentators from Indonesia who is fluent both in Indonesian and English often did code switching in that show. This study focuses on the type of code switching used by Ivan Gunawan when commenting the contestants’ performances and the reasons why he did it. There were 12 contestants from six Asian countries consisting of 6 males and 6 females, from six different countries. The data were taken from 4 episodes of November, 8th, 11th 14th, and 16t.h. The data were analyzed using the theory of code switching by Holmes and Wardhaugh. The result showed that four types of code switching proposed by Holmes and Wardhaugh were found in this study. The most dominant type of code switching which appeared in this study was intra-sentential switching, in which Ivan Gunawan mostly switched words within sentence. Then, the factor which probably motivated Ivan Gunawan in doing code switching was the topic, participants, and social context.
