Abstract

Nowadays heroines become a popular character in many literary works, they are depicted as a woman whose ability are equal with men to protect their surroundings. These heroines are usually having the ability to use weapons, yet many people do not know that heroines do not always have to have this ability. This study attempts to reveal the portrayal of a bladeless heroine in a novel entitled The Dovekeepers. Using Valerie Frankel’s theory of heroine’s journey, this study focuses on the journey of a female character to break the stereotype about heroines character that mostly associated with masculine appearance and ability. The primary data uses a novel by Alice Hoffman entitled The Dovekeepers. This study applied close reading method in order to find the data needed for the analysis. The analysis started by examining the heroine’s journey experienced by Shirah as the main character in this novel, then the characteristic of Shirah as a heroine will be examine using Valerie Frankel’s feminine archetypes. Shirah experiences not all of the steps of the journey, yet she is still considered as a heroine. She also considered as “The Great Mother” since in her journey she helps the other character in achieving their family. This study reveals that a heroine who does not have the ability of using weapons does exist, and a mother is an example of this heroine in our daily life.
