Abstract

Women objectification in the media has increased over the last decades. The media often create certain expectations, values, and norms about the physical attractiveness of women. Monitoring the body as a general standard for women is one of the causes of women objectification. The comments and social judgments given by others towards women’s bodies or physical performance become the main core in defining the beauty and worthiness of women. Asia’s Next Top Model is one of the examples of reality talent show modeling contest. The aim of this study is to analyze further about women objectification in Asia’s Next Top Model. This study uses a qualitative method, supported by the objectification theory proposed by Frederickson and Roberts. Since the object of this study is a TV program, John Fiske’s Television Culture was also applied. This study found out that through the analysis of reality and representation codes, the participants as Asian women are objectified and sexualized by men and fashion industries to keep their dominance and gain profit. Thus the ideology of patriarchy and capitalism are conveyed in this program. The participants are willing to get objectified by others to be a success and famous. The value of physical performance shrinks only to their bodies. Their bodies are transformed into a commodity to sell products and become the icon of beauty standard as well as an image of social perfection.
