Abstract

This study examines the representation of Orientalism portrayed in The Hangover Part II movie. The movie tells about the Wolf Pack which travels from America to Thailand to attend a wedding ceremony. It depicts the idea of Orientalism happened to the Orient based on the Occident‟s point of view. This study discusses the way Orientalism is represented through narrative and nonnarrative aspects. The Orientalism idea delivered through the othering process and the construction of binary opposition done by the occident towards the orient which could create the superiority of the occident towards the orient. The theory proposed by Edward Said entitled Orientalism is used to analyze the movie. This study uses a qualitative research whose data are obtained from The Hangover Part 2 movie, library research, journal articles and any other related sources. This study reveals that The Hangover Part 2 movie depicted the Orientalism issue through the representation of the orient in this movie where the orient are being portrayed negatively compared to the occident. There is a model minority idea reflected in the Orient character. The environment of Bangkok also portrayed as dangerous and has negative culture. Moreover, this study also finds several elements of non-narrative aspects which support the idea of Orientalism; especially portraying the image of the orient from the occident‟s point of view.
