Abstract

The present development of technology allows human to interact with computer using natural language. Even though it has not been fully capable in natural conversation, its technological development could be noticed by the release of Artificial Intelligence which utilises language as the interface. One of them is Digital Personal Assistant such as Siri, Cortana, Alexa, and Google Assistant which are designed to ease products use. Regarding the fact the language is utilised as user interface, this study is aimed to discover a linguistic phenomenon that occurs in the communication between human and the conversational agent. This study used Cooperative Principle theory by H. Paul Grice as theoretical framework. In an effort to maintain cooperativeness of the conversation, interlocutors are expected to comply the four maxims which are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. In research method, the data were collected by giving set of requests in various syntactical structures to Google Assistant while the data were analysed using qualitative approach with reflexive and descriptive fashion. Reflexive method is one of qualitative approaches which utilises researcher’s experience as acceptable knowledge in an effort to assess Google Assistant cooperativeness. The study resulted that the structure of sentence of user query significantly affect the understanding capability and the inability to understand was presented in an unrelated search result.
