Abstract
This study aims to find out the perception of English Department students at Universitas Airlangga (batch 2016) toward the use of Duolingo application for learning English and to explore the affordances and limitations of Duolingo application for learning English according to them. A number of 20 students were involved in this study. The writer employed a mixed method by collecting quantitative and qualitative data using a questionnaire and interview. By using theory of perception and MALL, the writer analysed students’ perception of using Duolingo for learning English and also its affordances and limitations. The results showed that English Department students batch 2016 at Universitas Airlangga perceived Duolingo as an application which is easy to use, enjoyable, and useful for learning English in more positive perception rather than as an addictive and motivating application for learning English. There are some affordances of Duolingo, such as easy to use, suitable to be used for learning the basic of new languages, helpful for learning grammar and vocabulary, having some motivational features and good user interface design, and also fun learning, whilst the limitations are repeated exercises, not recommended for learning speaking, not suitable for advanced English users, not as a main source for language learning, and not recommended for classroom settings.
