Abstract

Bullying is considered as a fundamental major issue in the world. It often happens in everyday life and all people from child to adult can be the bullier or the victim of bullying and it can happen to a males or females. The bullying is not only categorized as physical bullying, but it can also about mental bullying. People who bully others tend not to know the effect of the bullying itself for the victim. As in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, the main character, Hannah Baker, experiences any kind of bullying from her friends in school. Physical bullying, verbal bullying, and mental bullying has already struck her. The bullying gives effect to her life which she decided to commit suicide. This study analyzes on how the acts of bullying lead her decision in committing suicide. This research used descriptive analysis method since the writer applied new criticism theory to analyze the novel. The formal elements searched in this study are characterization, plot and point of view. The formal elements work to shape the theme of the novel as the organic unity. This study finds out that bullying will result to committing suicide.
