Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Pharmacists have an important role in the management of hypertension. Although studies from various countries have reported the role of pharmacists in the management of hypertension, there were barriers to implementation in pharmacy practice, such as negative perceptions of pharmacists and stakeholders, including patients and doctors. This study aimed to determine the patients’ perception of pharmacist role in the management of hypertension in the community pharmacy setting including: assessment, identifying and solving treatment related problems, contacting prescriber to clarify or modify prescription and providing patient education and taking blood pressure to check the effectiveness of therapy. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 patients with hypertension based on prescription data from community pharmacies in Surabaya. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed ad verbatim. Four key themes identified included assessment, identification and problem solving related therapy, communication with stakeholders and monitoring. The results showed that the majority of patient with hypertension has not noticed pharmacist activities on the management of hypertension. Pharmacists need to demonstrate their potential roles to help achieve therapeutic outcomes for patients with hypertension.
