Abstract

Belief about medicine use was a significant determinant of adherence of medication use during pregnancy. Negative perception occure when pregnant women assume that most drugs cause more harm than benefit for them and their pregnancy. Moreover, in the third trimester of pregnancy, some drugs show adverse effects, for example penicillin, tetracycline, and gentamicin. This study was aimed to reveal belief of medicine use of third trimester pregnant women during pregnancy. This study was cross-sectional study using accidental sampling method. Measurement of perception was performed using Belief about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ). Inclusion criteria were third trimester pregnant woman who was in primary health care center in Surabaya when surveyor collected data. Data was then analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 22. There were 207 (42.1%) third trimester pregnant women from 492 pregnant women at Primary Health Care Center in Surabaya. Majority of respondents 168 or 81.2% tended to have a moderate to high score which meant that there were perceptions of doctor use too many drugs, 147 or 71% perceived that drug is something dangerous, addictive and poisonous, 130 or 62.8% expressed high concern about potential side effects of prescribed medications, 112 or 54.1% had strong belief in the needs and efficacy of prescribed medications. Most respondents of third trimester have negative perceptions. This suggests that the majority of respondents were worried about using the drug during pregnancy. Thus, pharmacists should provide education to pregnant women especially those with negative perceptions in order to prevent them from non-adhere in taking their medication regimens
