Abstract

The world’s malaria cases are more than 1 million people every year. The spread of resistance to some antimalarial drugs had caused many problems. The discovery of new antimalarial drugs to be one of the main priorities, especially from the natural origin. One of the plants that have antimalarial activity is Helianthus annuus L. from Asteracea family. The research by Kusumaningrum (2016), that chloroform extract of H. annuus leaf has IC50 value of 0,037 μg/mL that categorized as strong active antimalarial and the chloroform extract positively contains terpenoid subtances. This study was aimed to determine the fraction of chloroform extract from H. annuus leaf have antimalarial activity with in vitro study. Chloroform extract from H. annuus leaf were fraction using vacuum column chromatography to separate the active substances that suspected antimalarial activity. The fraction of chloroform extract from H. annuus leaf obtained 6 major fractions. The antimalarial assay was done using 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum. The concentration of the assay solutions are serial dilution 100 – 0,01 μg/mL. Fraction 4 with IC50 value of 0,15 μg/mL was the most potent as antimalarial. Fraction 4 positively contains terpenoid and flavonoid subtances.
