Abstract

Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr. is one of plant that has antimalarial activity. In vitro antimalarial activity from ethanolic extract of S. androgynus leaves have been observed as active as antimalarial with IC 50 value of 1.917 μg/mL. The aim of this study is to evaluate in v itro antimalarial activity of fractionations from ethanolic extract of S. androgynus leaves. The ethanolic extract was fractionated by vacuum column chromatography method and resulted seven fractions (I - VII) and identified of terpenoid. In vitro test of the seven fractions perfomed using 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum which has been synchronized and incubated for 48 hours. The concentration of the assay solutions are dilution 100 – 0.01 μg/mL. The results showed that the fraction V has activity of antimalarial with IC 50 value of 2.042 μg/mL, while fraction II has IC 50 >10 μg/mL, and fraction I, III, IV, VI and VII have IC 50 >100 μg/mL. In conclusion, fraction V was classified as active as antimalarial agent, while fraction I, II, III, IV, VI and VII w ere classified as inactive as antimalarials agents.
