Abstract

Hair tonic is a hair cosmetic preparation to increase the hair density or stimulate hair growth in hair bald or hair loss. Krangean (Litsea cubeba) has been widely used in hair care product and mangkokan leaves (Nothopanax scutellarium Merr.) has traditionally been used for hair loss treatment. The purpose of this study was intended to figure out whether the hair tonic preparation from Litsea seed extract and Nothopanax leaves extract had hair growth activity and physical stability. Ethanolic Litsea seed extract and Ethanolic Nothopanax leaves extract was formulated into various concentration i.e. Litsea seeds extracts 7.5% (Formula 1), Nothopanax leaves extract 7.5% (Formula 2), Litsea seed extract and Nothopanax leaves extract 2:1 (Formula 3); 1:1 (Formula 4); and 1:2 (Formula 5). Physical stability test was performed using cycling test. The hair growth activity test was conducted by hair length measurements on day 7, 14, and 21, total weight of hair on day 21, plus observation of the area of hair growth on day 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, 17, and 21 after appliying 1 ml of hair tonic for a total of 21 days on the dorsal skin of rats after depilation. Result showed the hair tonic was stable after cycling test and Formula 1 and Formula 2 provide hair growth activity with p value < 0,05.
