Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a Gram-positive bacteria commonly found in the human oral cavity which cause dental caries. Dental caries can be prevented by promoting oral hygiene and inhibition of Streptococcus mutans growth. Lactobacillus paracasei probiotic milk and calliandra honey, each had been proven their antibacterial activity. The objectives of this study is to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Lactobacillus paracasei probiotic milk and calliandra honey, ratio of the combination Lactobacillus paracasei probiotic milk and calliandra honey; which have maximum antibacterial activity, and MIC of the combination. The antibacterial activity was tested using agar well-diffusion method. The MIC of Lactobacillus paracasei probiotic milk is 55% and the MIC of calliandra honey is 25%. The optimal ratio gave the highest value of inhibition zone diameter of combination was 8:2 and the MIC of the combination of Lactobacillus paracasei milk probiotic 100% and calliandra honey 50% is 40%. It suggest that the combination of Lactobacillus paracasei probotic milk and calliandra honey can be developed further as a dental product.
