Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. The bacteria was widely used as probiotic is Lactobacillus casei. Lactobacillus casei is not resistant to acidic conditions in stomach but has an intestinal action target. Microparticle delivery system are designed to protect Lactobacillus casei from acidic conditions and release them in their action target. Probiotic microparticles was made by spray drying method in 120 oC inlet temperature with different concentration of methacrylic acid copolymer L type as matrix. Three different formulas are formula I, formula II, and formula III with 0,50%; 0,75%; and 1,00% concentration methacrylic acid copolymer L type. Protection test from acidic condition were performed in all formula. The result showed that increasing methacrylic acid copolymer L type concentration can increase Lactobacillus casei protection from gastric condition. The highest protection was obtained by formula III. Data protection test was analyzed using One- Way ANOVA and showed there was significant different only with formula I.
