Abstract

Quercetin is a flavonol that has many activities including as an antioxidant. Nevertheless, quercetin has bioavailability problem due to its poor solubility in water. In order to improve solubility of quercetin, cocrystals method was applied. Cocrystals of quercetin were succesfully produced with malonic acid as coformer at two different molar ratios, prepared by solvent-drop grinding. Their physicochemical characteristics were investigated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The thermogram, diffractogram, infrared spectrum, and microphotograph of the cocrystals showed that it had different physicochemical characteristics compared to quercetin, malonic acid, and its physical mixtures. The thermogram showed that the cocrystals had melting points between the melting point of quercetin and malonic acid. The diffractogram of the cocrystals showed three new peaks. The infrared spectrum of the cocrystals had some shifted peaks compared to the pure compounds which indicates hydrogen bond formation. The microphotographs obtained from SEM showed that the cocrystals formed different crystal habit compared to quercetin and malonic acid.
