Abstract

This study discusses the comparison of word formation processes on unique words in song lyrics in 1999 and in 2013 with a case study of Eminem’s albums. It aims to find out the type of word-formation process that is most frequently used on unique words in song lyrics in 1999 and in 2013, and to determine the differences between the word-formation processes on unique words in song lyrics in 1999 and in 2013. The main theory used in this study is word-formation processes by Yule (2010). This study uses qualitative method. The data of this study are song lyrics of Eminem’s albums in 1999 and in 2013. The writer collects the data by finding the song lyrics on Eminem’s official website, copypasting the lyrics into Notepad and saving them in .txt format, and identifying the unique words. The data are analyzed by categorizing the unique words, identifying the meaning, comparing the unique words in 1999 and in 2013, and interpreting the results. The results show clipping is the most frequently used type in forming the unique words in song lyrics in 1999 and in 2013. There are three other types of word-formation processes on unique words in 1999 which are sounds alteration, phonetic spelling, and onomatopoeia. In 2013, there are eleven other types in forming the unique words, which are syllabification, dialectal pronunciation, euphemistic alteration, etc. The percentage of unique words emergence in Hip-hop song lyrics from 1999 to 2013 increased by 0.5%.
