Abstract

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is often happens in children. Symptoms have important role in order to make the diagnosis. Late treatment sometimes happen due to non-spesific symtomps. Objective: This research aims to study clinical profile of children with upper UTI (pyelonephritis) and lower UTI (cystitis) in Dr. Soetomo State Hospital. Method: This research was using secondary data (medical records) and analyzed descriptively. Result: There are 57 subjects in this research (30 pyelonephritis and 27 cystitis). Under 1 year old, in pyelonephritis boys and girls are equal, but in cystitis boys (60%) are more frequent. Between 15 years old, both in pyelonephritis and cystitis, girls are more frequent (56,3%;64,7%). Major cause of pyelonephritis is E. coli (40%) and and major cause of cystitis is E. coli (40,7%). In pyelonephritis, all patients is fever with the two most common symptoms: diarrhea (60%) and lethargy (56,7%). In cystitis, most patients have no fever. The two most common symptoms are lethargy (44,4%) and irritable (33,3%). Urinary symptoms such as polyuria and hematuria are more frequent in cystitis (22,2%;7,4%) than in pyelonephritis (0%,0%). Prevalence of pyelonephritis is 0,285% and of cystitis is 0,247%. Conclusion: Under 1 year old, in pyelonephritis boys and girls are equal, in cystitis boys are more frequent. In older children, girls are more frequent. Major cause of both disease is E. coli. Most symptoms shown in pyelonephritis is diarrhea and in cystitis is lethargy. Urinary symptoms are common in cystitis. The prevalence of pyelonephritis is more frequent than cystitis.
