Abstract

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of resistance problem, causing by Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause several infection. An alternative antibiotic should be examined to reduce the incidence of resistance. Indonesia produce tons of papaya (Carica papaya L. ) each year and waste of the seeds are disused. Therefore, researcher examined the benefit of papaya seeds extract against both of bacteria. Objective: Comparing antibacterial activity of papaya seeds extract towards Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA. Methods: Antibacterial activity was tested by using dilution method to find out minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Each bacteria gains seven different concentrations, 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125%, and 1,5625%. MBC was determined by plating tube suspension from broth dilution test on nutrient agar plate. Results: After 4 time repetition, MIC of papaya seeds extract that inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus was 25%, meanwhile toward MRSA was 50%. Concentration of papaya seeds extract that needed to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus is lower than MRSA. The colony of Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA were found at all concentrations in all nutrient agar plate. Conclusions: There is a bacteriostatic activity in papaya seeds extract against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with MIC of 25% and MRSA with MIC of 50%. There is no bactericidal activity in papaya seeds extract against Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA.
