Abstract

Background:. Cataract is one of the causes of blindness by 51%, which represents 20 million people according to World’s Health Organization in 2010. The formation of cataract is induced by several risk factors and diabetes mellitus increases the risk of cataract formation in patients by 2-5 times. Methods: This research took place at the Eye Clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, using medical records as data source. The method of this research is descriptive retrospective in prevalence of cataract in patients with diabetes mellitus at the eye clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya in June 2014 – July 2015, with the total amount of sample of 474 patients. One of the variables researched was the prevalence of cataract patients with diabetes mellitus, the distribution of age and sex. Results: The result showed that the prevalence of cataract in patients with diabetes mellitus at the eye clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya in June 2014 – July 2015 had the percentage of 38.18% (181 patients). Based on the distribution of age, 26.51% of them were patients with an age ranges from 56-61 years (48 patients) and it also obtained the central tendency and dispersion as x̄ ± SD = 60,51 ± 9,4 in which mean (x̄ ) is the central tendency and standard deviation (SD ) is the dispersion. Based on distribution of sex, male had the percentage of 51.38% (93 patients), while female was 48,62% (88 patients) of the total amount of patients. Conclusions: There are 474 patients with cataract at the Eye Clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya in June 2014 – July 2015 and 38.18% of them had prevalence of cataract with diabetes mellitus, dominated by patients with an age ranges from 56-61 years, and sex of male.
