Abstract

Low Back Pain (LBP) is a symptom that most commonly experienced around the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain (LBP) among patients in Neurology outpatient clinic Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. A case control study was conducted on 90 randomly selected patients, including 45 patients with low back pain and 45 patients without low back pain. A structured interview based on questionnaire including demographic, lifestyle, occupational characteristics as well as prevalence and risk factors of LBP was used. Of the 45 patients with LBP, there are 22 (48.72%) samples of males and 23 (51.28%) samples of females. Patients with LBP mostly at 50-59 years group (44.44%). Based on the BMI distribution most patients are in the normal BMI group (69%). In this study, the activities often performed by patients with LBP are the siting and standing for long periods (77.8%). Patients with LBP who smoked were 15 patients (33,33%). From the analysis using chi square test, there is no significant relationship between gender, age, BMI, often performed activity, and smoking of patients with LBP and patients without LBP. Further studies will be needed with a larger sample in order to get more representative and meaningful information regarding LBP and other problems that associated with it.
