Abstract

Background. Probiotic bacteria is defined as “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. Probiotic bacteria can be used to prevent caries because of its ability to inhibit growth of S. mutans. Probiotic bacteria is able to inhibit growth of bacteria by reproducing antimicrobial (bacteriocin and H2O2) along with lactic acid. Moreover, probiotic bacteria can do binding competition with S. mutans through TLR-2. Purpose. To understand how probiotic (L. reuteri, L. acidophilus, and L. casei) inhibit growth of S. mutans. Methods. Measuring inhibit zone that formed on TYC agar that previously been inoculated by S. mutans (1,5 x 108 CFU/ml)and given probiotic bacteria (L. reuteri 108 CFU/ml, L. acidophilus 5 x 109 CFU/ml, dan L. casei 108 CFU/ml). Conclusion. Probiotic bacteria capables to inhibit growth of S. mutans. L. reuteri can inhibit better followed by L. casei and L. acidophilus.
