Abstract
Background: External otitis refers to inflammation of the external auditory canal. This disease are highest during childhood and decrease with age. The epidemiology of external otitis have not been well described in RSUD Dr. Soetomo. Method: This is a descriptive retrospective study observing the profile of patients with external otitis at RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya based on major complaints, age, sex, ear side, ear picking history and type of otitis externa. Results: Among 1.658 medical record data collected, 855 patients data were obtained according to the inclusion criteria. The most major complaint are pain, with 499 complaints (52,51 %). The most frequent age range is 21-30 years, with 180 patients (21,1 %). The highest gender is female, with 486 patients (56,8%). The most profile of external otitis by the ear side is unilateral, with 791 cases (92,5 %). The most profile of external otitis patients by ear picking, obtained data that the history of ear picking recorded equal to 276 data (32,2 %). And the most frequent type of external otitis in RSUD Dr. Soetomo is acute otitis externa, with 259 patients (30,3 %). Conclusion: Most of the patients with acute otitis externa in RSUD Dr. Soetomo 2016 are female and came with the major complaint of unilateral ear pain. Nevertheless, there were limitations in this research, that is incomplete recording of history of ear picking in medical record at RSUD Dr. Soetomo in 2016
