Abstract

Stroke is one of the main cause of morbidity and mortality in Indonesia with diabetes as one of the big three modifiable risk factors in ischemic stroke. From here, the author would like to investigate whether the length of stay of diabetic ischemic stroke patients are longer than the length of stay of non-diabetic ischemic stroke patients. The study at Doctor Soetomo Hospital Surabaya is conducted with a cross-sectional research design. Through a series of inclusion and exclusion criteria, this study included a total of 1679 patients. The average age of non-diabetic (n=891), prediabetic (n=232), and diabetic (n=556) ischemic stroke patients, consecutively 57.89 (SD ± 12.24), 59.23 (SD ± 11.19), and 58.63 (SD ± 9.89). Meanwhile, the average length of stay of non-diabetic, prediabetic, and diabetic ischemic stroke patients, consecutively 10.16 (SD ± 5.65), 10.76 (SD ± 7.17), and 10.86 (SD ± 6.27). In hospital complications are found in 217 ischemic stroke patients, enlisted as: 107 (12.01%) non-diabetic ischemic stroke patients, 29 (12.50%) prediabetic ischemic stroke patients, and 81 (14.57%) diabetic ischemic stroke patients. The length of stay of ischemic stroke patients has a wide variation, there are no significant correlation between the length of stay of ischemic stroke patient with diabetes mellitus and the length of stay of ischemic stroke patients without diabetes.
