Abstract
Background: Gallstone Disease (GD) is an endemic condition in both Western and Eastern countries. Among the patients with cholecystolithiasis, 8-20% of the cases can develop common bile duct stones (CBDS) or choledocholithiasis. If remains neglected, the cases of CBDS in cholecystholithiasis cases may leads to dangerous complications and financial burden. The best prevention, diagnosis & treatment modalities can be developed through thorough understanding of the patient characteristics. Purpose: To study the prevalence & characteristics of patients with coexisting cholecystolithiasis & choledocholithiasis in Surgical Ward of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital in 2015-2016. Method: This research is a descriptive retrospective study. The samples are all patients with diagnosis of coexisting cholecystolithiasis & choledocholithiasis, and the data is obtained from Medical Record Centre of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital during period of Januari 2015– December 2016. Results: There are 56 cases identified, the prevalence is 33.9% among cholecystolithiasis cases, and 24.5% among all gallstone cases. Most of the patients are female (55.3%), between 40-49 years old; and have normal BMI (63%). The most frequent symptom is epigastric / right hypochondriac pain (92.1%). Most of the patients have abnormal LFTs –ALT (78.4%), ALT (100%), TBIL (83.8%), DBIL (94.6%). Majority (94.7%) of the patients have complications, with the most frequent is obstructive jaundice (89.5%). Open cholecystectomy are performed in all of the patients (100%).
