Abstract
Artesunate is an artemisin derivate, a malarial drug that has been classified as Biopharmaceutical Class II (BSC II) which has poor solubility in aqueous media and high permeability through membrane. Drugs with a limited aqueous solubility show low bioavaibility and will affect dissolution as a determine rate limiting step in the absorption process of the drug. Cocrystal has been studied by many researcher as a method to improve solubility and dissolution rate. The research aimed to determine enhancement of solubility and dissolution rate of co-crystal of artesunate. The co-crystal of artesunate-nicotinamide was made by comparison 1:1 with solvent evaporation method and then were tested for solubility and dissolution rate. The result showed that co-crystal of artesunate with nicotinamide by solvent evaporation method could increase solubility by 17,26% and dissolution rate of artesunate by 97%.
