Abstract

Childhood is an important stage in someone's life. In this stage, mental development happens and a person would confront many events in his/her life. Some incidents and events can affect someone's life and can cause traumatic experiences in his/her old age. This study discusses about childhood trauma and defense mechanism issue depicted in Dave Boyle, in Dennis Lehane's novel Mystic River. This study focuses on Dave Boyle's childhood trauma and defense mechanism triggered by his childhood trauma. Dave Boyle, is a victim of sexual abuse of two men who captive him for four days. This incident is involved his trauma and defense mechanism. The writer used qualitative method in this study. The research was done by collecting data, classifying data, and concluding the findings. This study divided the theory into two parts that were defense mechanism and childhood trauma. This study proved that Dave Boyle's personality was disturbed because of abuse he got when he was 12 years old. Later, he grows some defense mechanism towards men that have personal relation with boys. He displayed three types of defense mechanism, which are denial, repression and displacement. This found that Dave Boyle had some disruption on his sexual development and caused some defense mechanism built around him
