Abstract

The late phenomenon of youth music consumption where they start to consume music from analogue medium, once again, draw the attention of many experts, such as Ian Woodward and Dominique Bartsmanski, to conduct research about it. They try to figure out what is the reason behind vinyl revival which is popular around 2013 until 2015. It breaks the rules of the perspective from society about youth, music and technology in which the youth nowadays is identic with digital music consumption, not the analogue ones. By using an in-depth interview technique for the method of research, the writer conducts a study about young people in Surabaya who are trying to consume vinyl record, an old music medium. The writer is figuring out their way to use it. By analyzing their practice through the stages which is stated by Dan Laughey: previewing, purchasing and appreciating stage, the writer found out that the young people in Srabaya are doing some intensive practice of listening music, while they also maintain their impression through exclusive performance in which often associated with club activity. The writer also finds that there are several meanings behind every practices they do, including the effort to resist againts music piracy; to appreciate their favorite musician work, and to distinct themself from other music listener. These findings reveal that the phenomenon of vinyl revival happens in Surabaya is the result of globalization as a new trend mixed with local culture. It creates new mindset and practice for the youth, in which it also explain why the consumption phenomenon in Surabaya is considered to be different with other the phenomenon which happen in other cities
