Abstract

This thesis is written to find the problems about the idea of masculine among teenagers in Surabaya especially high school students. This issue occur because of the influence by the media, one of them is Honda Developmental Basketball events or commonly known as DBL. This event has a student athlete concept which requires all basketball participants to have academic ability. This concept arise a new view that basketball players not only have muscles and athletic body, but they must be smart and good in academic field. So, the authors examine the perceptions of high school students in St. Louis 1 Surabaya on the influence of student athlete concept to masculinity on basketball players. In this research, the writer does a qualitative method by interviewing 14 students to gain their perceptions about the elements of masculinity in basketball players. The writer interviews them in St. Louis 1 Surabaya school and interprets the results by using Connell’s Hegemonic Masculinity. The respondents are the basketball players and they are interviewed by using in-depth interview, and become the subject of this study. Their results of the opinions from the correspondents are the primary data and object for this study. Purposive sampling would be used in this study to found the most appropriate samples based on the writer’s criteria. Purposive sampling was one kind of qualitative research, but it was dealt with the researcher’s considerations before did the sampling because it was depended on the context and the nature of the research. The population is the masculinity on basketball players, and the sample is the basketball players who became the participants in DBL event. The perceptions about masculinity in basketball players are different toward the students in St. Louis 1 Surabaya school. DBL has an impact on them. They assume masculinity in DBL players are different. They believe that basketball players with good mentality and attitude, famous, competitive, and the champion are examples of an ideal masculinity.
