Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the effect of various H2O2 concentrations in bleaching materials on the marginal leakage of composite resin restorations. Eighty four human upper maxillary incisives were used in this study. A round cavity measuring 3 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm in depth was made on a bucco-cervical side of each tooth. All teeth were filled with composite resins. The sixty three restored teeth were divided into 9 groups consist of 7 teeth each. The restored teeth on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th group were bleached with 10% H2O2 for 2 days, 10% H2O2 for 4 days, 10% H2O2 for 7 days, 30% H2O2 for 2 days, 30% H2O2 for 4 days, 30% H2O2 for 7 days, 90% H2O2 for 2 days, 90% H2O2 for 4 days, 90% H2O2 for 7 days respectively. The rest of the teeth were not bleached and were used as a control group. The marginal leakage on each restoration was assesed using a dye (methylen blue 0.25%) penetration technique. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between the marginal leakage of the bleached teeth and the unbleached ones (control). The marginal leakage of the bleached and restored teeth were significantly higher than that of the unbleached teeth. The leakage of the bleached teeth with 10% H2O2 were significantly smaller than that of the teeth bleached with 30% H2O2 and 90% H2O2. The leakage of the bleached teeth with 30% H2O2 were significantly smaller than that of the teeth bleached with 90%. It was also found that the leakage of the two-day bleached teeth were significantly smaller than that of the four-day and seven-day bleached teeth. The leakage of the four-day bleached teeth were significantly smaller than that of the seven-day bleached teeth. It can be concluded that the concentration of H2O2 influenced the marginal leakage of composite restorative resins. The higher the concentration and the longer the duration time, the greater the leakage. Key words: bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, leakage, composite resin restoration
