Abstract

Code switching is a common phenomenon in multilingual country like Indonesia and can occur in any contexts. This study aims to find out types and functions of code switching used by the content classes lecturers in the English Department Universitas Airlangga. The subjects are the lecturers in English Phonetics-Phonology class, Introduction to General Linguistics class, and Semiotics class. Those class were chosen by the writer because they are the new subject for the third and seventh semester. This research adopted qualitative method and employed field observation, thus the research conducted by recording and transcribing the data. This study analyzed code switching by using Hoffman’s theory of types and functions of code-switching (1991). This study shows some important results. First, the lecturers use two types of code-switching: grammatical and contextual. From grammatical classification, the most frequently used type in the classes is intra-sentential code switching and situational code switching for contextual classification. Second, the most found function in class is repetition used for clarification. This function relates to intra-sentential code switching which is used to maintain their teaching and learning process to run smoothly. The main factor that affects the lecturers to switch the code is they want to have a better communication with their students, so the students can understand their material better.
