Abstract
Background:The prevalence of allergic diseases has been increased both in developed and developing countries. Allergies in children become problems as they will disrupt the process of child development, especially during infancy. Previous studies of the relationship between delivery method and exclusive breastfeeding with allergic manifestations had shown contradictive results. This research aims to analyze the association between delivery method and exclusive breastfeeding with allergic manifestations in toddler. Methods:The research used cross sectional study. There were 94 toddlers around 1-24 months old taken as samples whose parents was agreed to fill the informed consent sheet to be interviewed using a questionnaire at one of type B government hospitals in Surabaya. The Data were analysed using Chi-square test and multivariat analysis (logistic regression). Result: There were 69,1% toddler with allergic manifestations (skin, respiratory tract or both of them). While infant born by cesarean section, exclusive breastfeeding and parental history of allergy were at 50%, 29,8% and 25,5%, respectively. There was significant association between exclusive breastfeeding with allergic manifestations (OR:0,374 CI95% 0,143-0,978, p=0,45) but delivery method had nosignificant association (p=0,074). History of parental allergies, identified as confounding variable,has a greater risk for allergic manifestations (OR: 4,084 CI95% 1,087-15,343, p=0,037). Conclusion: There was a significant association between exclusive breastfeeding with allergic manifestations in toddler when analyzed along with a history of parental allergies, with exclusive breastfeeding as protective factor of allergic manifestations.
