Abstract

Surabaya is known as an urban city. It is diverse in term of culture, and one of them is the language. In term of language attitudes, different age groups are assumed to have different attitudes towards languages. The aim of this study was to know the language attitudes of the participants toward the advertisements of the study and the motives that influence their attitude. This study was done by employing quantitative approach because it consists of numerical data. The data were collected using direct method by using questionnaires and interviews. The participants of this study were Javanese speakers consist of 30 male adolescents and 30 male adults. The object of this study was advertisements which are written in Javanese, Indonesian, and English. The results of this study showed that the participants have positive attitude toward advertisements which are written in English and Indonesia and negative attitude toward advertisements which are written in Javanese. Additionally, both participants’ positive and negative attitude were influenced by instrumental and integrative motives.
