Abstract

Background. Using fixed appliance could affect bacterial flora balance in cavum oris, consumption of products contain probiotic could help in affecting salivary pH thus can maintain the balance of bacterial flora in cavum oris. Purpose. Knowing the differences of salivary pH after consumpting products with probiotic with different type, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus reuteri. Methods. 30 subjects of 18-25 years old male students with fixed appliance of Airlangga University given with 3 tests. First test was mouthwashing with aquades for control. Second test was mouthwashing with probiotic milk. Third test was chewing a probiotic gum, then saliva secretion was being checked every 10 minutes. Result. There were significant differences salivary pH changes between 3 tests. (p value = 0.000; p < 0.05) Salivary pH at third test was more basal that the other tests. Conclusion. Heterofermentative probiotic bacteria, Lactobacillus reuteri could help maintaining the balance of bacterial flora in cavum oris, because one of its effect is make salivary pH be more base
