Abstract

Objective : To analyze the correlation between total testosterone levels and Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) in older men using Tewameter. Method : This was an observational analytic cross sectional study, involving 16 samples. Samples were elderly male patient (≥ 60 years old) who visited Andrology Clinic Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya from May to July 2017, as well as meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples were tested for total testosterone and Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) measurement using Tewameter. Result : The samples were aged between 60 and 75 years old with mean of 66 years old and standard deviation of 4,13. Total samples total testosterone levels ranged from 146,11 to 575,10 ng / dL with mean of 351,67 ng / dL and standard deviation of 116,34. TEWL levels of samples ranged from 17,2 to 50,8 grams / hour / m2 with mean of 31 grams / hour / m2 and standard deviation of 9,20. Test result of normal distribution of total testosterone level data using One Sample Kolmogrov Smirnov Test with p value = 0,962 while TEWL data p = 0,960. Since both were normally distributed, total testosterone levels and TEWL relationships were analyzed using Pearson correlation. Obtained correlation coefficient value of – 0,853 with significance 0,0001 (p < 0,005). Conclusion : There was a significant relationship between total testosterone level and TEWL. Negative correlation value indicates the relationship is not unidirectional which means the lower the total testosterone level, the higher the TEWL value.
