Abstract

Oxidative stress can be triggered by exposure to psychological stress. Oxidative stress can be reduced by the consumption of exogenous antioxidants, green tea is considered able to reduce oxidative stress. The purpose of this study to examine the effect of green tea steeping on blood glucose, MDA and SOD activity in Wistar strain male rats exposed to psychological stress. Design used in this study is a Randomized Post Test Only Group Design. There are five groups of rats, 2 is a normal control group and stress, as well as the 3 treatment groups. Exposure to psychological stress by changing the sleep patterns of emergencies, so we get the condition of experimental animals which undergo oxidative stress, then the administration of green tea steeping in the group treated with a single dose of 3.6 ml/head. Blood glucose data obtained, the treatment group decreased after the 1st hour administration steeping green tea which is 88.8 mg/dl, and remained at the same average on 6th hour (87.6 mg/dl) and to 24th hour (88.6 mg/dl). Similarly, the levels of MDA decreased on 1st hour is 3.38 nmol/ml, and remained at the same average on 6th hour (3.31 nmol/ml) and 24th hour (3.39 nmol/ml). While SOD activity increased on 1st is 92.92 U/mL, and then increased on 6th (93.33 U/mL) and increasing the maximum at the 24th hour (94.22 U/mL) after giving of green tea in this research. Effect of phytochemicals in green tea are polyphenols that it contains the active components such as catechins and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is capable of neutralizing free radicals through electron donor or the H atom, by reducing the rate of oxidation by inhibiting the formation of a precursor of free radicals, polyphenols act as a scavenger in a chain reaction of lipid peroxide radicals through the donation of protons so that ROS is more stable and the reaction can be stopped immediately.
