Abstract

Nowadays, stand-up comedy is increasingly popular in Indonesia especially among teenagers. The popularity cannot be separated with the humors created by the comedians. Using the theory of cooperative principle and conversational implicatures proposed by Grice (1975), the purposes of the study are to identify the violation of maxims by Ridwan Remin, the winner of Stand-Up Comedy Indonesia Season 7 at Kompas TV to create humor and to reveal the implied meanings of those violating maxims. Furthermore, this study also aims to investigate the functions of humor produced by Ridwan Remin. The qualitative approach is used to answer the research questions. The writer selects nine out of sixteen performances by Ridwan Remin based on his longest duration during the competition of SUCI season 7. The results show that Ridwan Remin violate all the four maxims and some of them violate two maxims at the same time. Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Relation, and Maxim of Manner and Relation have the same occurrence in which 6 times violation (13.64%), Maxim of Quality is violated 5 times (11.36%), Maxim of Manner is violated 18 times (40.91%), and each of Maxim of Quantity and Relation and Maxim of Quality and Relation are violated 2 times (4.55%). Most of the implied meanings produced are to satirize something. In addition, the occurrences of functions of humor found in Remin’s performances are 8 times (23.53%) of Identification Function, 14 times (41.18%) of Clarification Function, 3 times (8.82%) of Enforcement Function, and 9 times (23.53%) of Differentiation Function.
