Abstract

In the 1930s, Male African-American athlete was being segregated due to their skin color and the law. However, in many of today’s biographical movies, their stories are presented with a better representation along with their struggle in achieving their triumph. This study aims to explore, how the 1930s Male African-American athlete, Jesse Owens, portrays in the Race (2016) movie and what the portrayals mean to today’s racial relations in the US. Using qualitative method, the method of data analysis used Narrative and Non-Narrative analysis. The discussion will be conducted using Stephen Greenblatt’s New Historicism. The portrayals of Jesse Owens and its meanings will be gained from the analysis of the difference between the movie and the written history. The results of the study show that the movie does not show Owens’ hard work in doing the sport, studying, working and the big role of his first coach who is Irish. These results are strongly related to the exclusion of African-American people in today’s American society. This study confirms the belief of white supremacy and African-American athlete’s stereotype; they only care about the sport. The portrayal of Jesse Owens in this movie represents how Male African-American Athlete in America nowadays, who still labeled with the stereotypes and encounter the same racial discrimination at the end of Obama’s presidential era.
