Abstract
The aim this study was to utilize the shell dust of snail Belamya javanica and produce chitosan from the same shell, then evaluate the ability of the shell dust and chitosan to remove heavy metals from aquatic system. Chitosan produced were characterized for degree of deacetylation (DD), water content, ash content and pH. Biosorption capacity of chitosan and the shell dust were evaluated by using it as package in 150 mm high, 17.5 mm i.d. columns. The heavy metals used were prepared at 10 mg/L using primary standards then passed through the columns. The results indicate that chitosan and the shell dust shown the potential to remove heavy metal with percentage adsorption up to 90%. The possible mechanism of biosorption appeared to be chelat and ion exchanges. The result obtained from the experiment that chitosan produced and the shell dust can be used as an efficient and enviromental friendly biosorbent for heavy metal from aquaeous solution.
