Abstract
Given the complexity of language in human interaction, interpersonal meaning is considered significant to realize since it can disclose social relation, role of participants, and judgement of the issue specifically in the perspective of political discourse. The study hence investigates how Donald Trump as a politician figure enacts interpersonal meaning through Modality Types along with its degree during the speech he delivers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia which particularly focuses on Islam as the central issue. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistic (1985-1994) and reintroduced by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004-2014) which discusses over language function is applied as the theoretical framework. The data were examined with qualitative method in which the clauses occured were coded and classified into their modality types by putting into table according to the degree then the frequeny of occurence was analyzed. The findings show that there are five main points can be exemplified which are modulation of modality types is the most prevalent (69.6%) indicates Trump’s commitment is preferably more in providing goods and services , median inclination comes as the highest occurence degree (84.21%) demonstrates the way Trump tries to not appear offensive, the different degree of modal expressions can show Trump’s judgment and several factors influenced the employment of the modals, modal auxiliary ‘will’ prevailing occurence (43.14%)might show the evidence of the predominantly use of that modal in the scope of political discourse and Trump markedly employs several strategies in enacting interpersonal meaning.
