Abstract

There are various ways to express what is going to say in communication. Paradis (1997) says that the expression of degree is an apparent feature of communication between human being. The meaning of certain degree expression is fixed when the words as well as phrases are used in spoken language than in writing. Paradis (2008) claims that degree has structure of meaning when it combines with other elements, such as events, things and states. She says that degree elements helps the interpretation of meaning in particular lexical item makes sense. The theory of degree modifiers by Paradis (1997) is used in this study to reveal the types and examples of degree modifiers words appear in the speeches of Malala Yousafzai, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton. This study applied Corpus Linguistics as a method to to discover the examples of degree modifiers by using AntConc. The findings suggest that booster is the type of degree modifiers that appear the most in the speeches of Malala, Michelle, and Hillary. Another finding is that very and most are the examples of degree modifiers that appear more significant than others in the speeches of all female speakers. The result of the study also reveals the function of degree modifiers according to the intention of the speakers. The first is to make their speech powerful. The second is to make their utterances more reliable and accurate. The third is to attract the audience’s attention.
