Abstract

There is a tendency for speaker to use politeness strategies in conversation including in communication during talk shows. This study analyzed politeness strategies used in the conversation between Najwa Shihab, the host of the talk show, and a participant, Zaadit Taqwa, whose action has become viral. Specifically, it focuses on types of politeness strategies used by the two speakers and the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies in the public conversation which is Mata Najwa talk show. To analyze the data, this study used Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987) of Politeness Strategies; which are divided into four types: Bald-On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record. The study found that all four types are used by Najwa Shihab and Zaadit Taqwa. The findings show that there are differences between Zaadit Taqwa and Najwa Shihab. Bald on record becomes the most frequent type of politeness strategies that is used by Najwa Shihab, meanwhile positive politeness becomes the most frequent type of politeness strategies that is used by Zaadit Taqwa. Relative power becomes the most common factor that influences them to use different types of politeness strategies.
