Abstract
Textual discourse and language of news manifest a relation which cannot be separated. Both of the aspects can be applied in a form of newspaper. Newspapers or online newspapers always deliver an interesting issue which practices cohesive devices in order to convey the meaning to the readers. Cohesive devices are useful to link on each words and bound them together to become a sentence and a paragraph. This study investigates the types of cohesive devices in the articles, regarding Indonesian flag incident, published in The Daily Mail Online Newspaper. The articles published on between August 20th and 23rd 2017 to be entitled are Sea Games: Oops! Malaysia upsets Indonesia with flag blunder, Indonesia angered after Malaysia shows its flag as Poland’s,Malaysia is apologized for showing Indonesia’s flag as Poland’s, Indonesia calls for calm over flag blunder at Southeast Asian Games, Hacker hit Malaysian sites over Indonesia flag gaffe. There is a concordance feature in AntConc aplication used to found out the items of cohesive devices that appears on those article. Theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) is applied to identify the use of cohesive devices, especially for grammatical cohesion. Rankema’s (2004) theory is also used as the supporting theory for lexical cohesion. The data of this study is the articles which were downloaded from The Daily Mail official website in http://www.dailymail.co.uk. These are the results of this study (1) the mostly used type of grammatical cohesion is demonstrative references (2) the type of lexical cohesion that mostly used is reiteration with the subtype of repetition.
