Abstract

This research relates to gender stereotypes, especially to Jennie Pegouskie as an actress and Ed-Sheeran as an actor in the song clip of the song "Shape of You” (2017), a video clip of the song directed by Jason Koenig which is released in Ed-Sheeran's own YouTube account. Using femininity and masculinity theory by R. W. Conell's and supported by Male Gaze's theory by Laura Mulvey. This research will also be analyzed more deeply using Television Culture theory by John Fiske with three features; Reality, Representation, and Ideology, aims to reveal the depiction of femininity and masculinity representing gender stereotypes as well as the dominance of the female and male models in the Shape of You song clip by Ed-Sheeran. This study uses a qualitative approach, as well as interpretative in interpreting the meaning through the signs of each story in the video clip that refers to the theories mentioned above, such as the existing relationship between woman and male models, their facial expressions, as well as the dominance that occurs between them. This study concludes that the woman has always been a male objectification even though the woman is already looking strong. On the other hand, those who look strong are not really strong, maybe they are strong in physical terms, maybe to live their lives and continue their future they will still need men, and vice versa, even though the man may be weaker than her female.
