Abstract

Hypertension is often referred to as the “silent killer”. It was reported that 168 thousand patients in Indonesia were undiagnosed with hypertension and thus not handled by health workers. Pharmacists play an important role in controlling the prevalence of cardiovascular disease where hypertension is one of the risk factors. Hypertension screening service is offered to detect high blood pressure in adults aged 18 years or over who have not been diagnosed previously with hypertension. International studies have shown that community pharmacists have potentials identifying hypertension risk in adults. This research was conducted to assess the potential community pharmacists in Surabaya on providing hypertension screening service. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on seven purposively selected community pharmacists. A framework COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour) system was used to guide all interviews. The results showed that although our informants have opportunities to perform hypertension screening service, they were likely to have low capability, i.e. poor knowledge about definition of hypertension and screening service. The absence of government regulations on community pharmacists’ role in providing hypertension screening service demotivated informants to offer the service. Therefore, pharmacist profession organization needs to provide pharmacist education and training, also negotiates with the government to regulate hypertension screening service by community pharmacists.
