Abstract

Kretek, a kind of distinct cigarette from Indonesia, is more than an exotic cigarette and an economic phenomenon. It is an integral part of Indonesia’s cultural tradition. Haji Jamhari, a cigarettes enthusiast from Kudus, Central Java, was the first person who discovered this mix of tobacco and cloves cigarettes. Komunitas Kretek was then founded. This community consists of people who smoke cloves cigarettes, especially ones made in Indonesia. This research wants to observe on how the cigarette consumption constructs the identity of Komunitas Kretek and to know more about the community itself. The researcher uses qualitative method to figure out the reasons related to the subject background; thus, the researcher will be able to find the meaning behind it. Indepth interviews are conducted in one month to get information and to do the interviews to the objects of the study. In this study, consumption theory by Veblen and some theories about consumption and identity are applied to conduct the analysis the identity of Komunitas Kretek and to know more about the community itself. Finally, this research discovers about the meaning and the identity formed by Komunitas Kretek. Komunitas Kretek is a community consists of people who smoke cloves cigarettes, especially ones made in Indonesia.
