Abstract

Introduction: Pneumonia is a serious infectious disease in children which causes the second highest mortality in infants. By 2015, about 16% or as many as 920,136 toddlers in the world die of pneumonia.The aim of this study is to explain characteristic of Pneumonia in children under 5 years old in primary health care of Surabaya. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Primary Health Care of Bulak Banteng, Tambak Rejo and Sawahan, from August to December 2017. This is a total sampling research with a total sample of 68 children. The data were collected by a set of questionnaire and medical record at the health centre. Results: The results of this study were 80.9% of children exposed to pneumonia aged 12-59 months, severity of pneumonia 91.2% is mild pneumonia, good nutrition status 61.8%, exclusive breastfeeding 42.6%, complete immunization 57.4%, mothers with primary education 44.1%, parent income under regional base salary 72.1%, overcrowding house 58.8%, home health not complying with criteria 69.1%, and exposure to air pollution 79.4% Conclusions: Most of children that diagnosed pneumonia have criteria: aged 12-59 months, mild pneumonia, mother with primary education, low average of parent income, home health not complying with criteria, and exposure to air pollutant.
