Abstract

Background: Heart failure (decompensatio cordis) is one of the health problems that are concerned in the community. The rate of morbidity, mortality, and treatment of heart failure continues to increase. The patient frequently comes to hospital with worsening and repetitive symptoms. This is further aggravated by the presence of various predisposing factors. Objective: This study aims to find out the characteristics of heart failure patients that were hospitalized at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya during July-December 2016. Methods: The study was a descriptive study using data methods through medical records with total sampling technique. Results: There were 84 samples according to the highest inclusion data and people with disabilities who survived hospitalization, male (63.1%), age 46-65 years (58.3%), and types of private jobs (41.7%), main complaints of dyspnea (72.4%), history of heart disease (43.8%), and family history of heart disease (55.6%), NYHA class IV (34.5%), the most length of stay is <10 days (84.1%), and the percentage of outcome patients with outpatient status (73.8%). The highest risk factors were hypertension (33.7%), most etiology was mitral insufficiency (17.2%), the most complication was atrial fibrillation (13.8%), and the most comorbid was type 2 diabetes mellitus (17.6%). Most of the patients were hospitalized once in the last 6 months (98%). Summary: Majority patients are male, 46-65 years old, and are private employee. Most reported main complaint is dyspnea, with history and family history of heart diseases, NYHA class IV with the most treatment time <10 days. The majority of outcome patients have outpatient status and have hypertension as risk factor. The highest etiology is mitral insufficiency, the most complication is atrial fibrillation, and the most comorbid is type 2 diabetes mellitus. Most patients are only hospitalized once during the last 6 months. With the lack of information, it still needs further studies with more complete data for better accuracy.
