Abstract

Introduction: People with schizophrenia are significantly more likely to be violent including schizophrenic clients in the community, than among those with other disorders. So in society today, mental illness and violence are often seen as inextricably linked, creating a harsh stigma for patients and, at times, an uncomfortable environment for their family. Assertiveness training at the stage of role playing is one of therapy that can improve the anger management skill, such as how to reveal anger emotion properly and communicate feeling, needs and willing assertively. Methods: This study used quasi-experimental pre-test-posttest control group design. The sample was obtained by using frederer formula and purposive sampling method, consisting a total of 36 respondents with 18 in control group and 18 in treatment group. The independent variable is assertiveness training (role playing), while the dependent variable is the anger management skill. Data was collected by using observation sheet on pre test and post test, and then analyzed by using Paired T-Test and Independent T-Test with level of significance p < 0,05. Results: The result showed that there were significant differences between pre test and post test in the treatment group (p=0.000), while in the control group there was no difference (p = 0.097). There were differences between control and treatment groups (p=0.000). Discussion: It can be concluded that assertiveness training at the stage of role playing has an effect to improve the anger management skill. Nurses who working in community health centers may apply this therapy in increasing the anger management skill of schizophrenic clients at community, so as to prevent recurrence of their violent behavior.
