Abstract

To communicate to others, people use different varieties of languages. The variety depends on to whom we talk to and where we take the conversation. Some linguists describe this kind of language variation as register. Register is the language of groups of people with common interests or jobs, or the language used in situations associated with such groups. This study analyzed the register features of bridge used by Airlangga Bridge Club’s players. The writer used qualitative method to analyze this research. The data was taken from the actual place and situation when Airlangga Bridge Club’s players do their weekly routine practice. This study aimed to find the linguistic features of register and describe the use of the register features used by Airlangga Bridge Club’s players based on the context. The writer focused on two features only, vocabulary features and morphological features. In analyzing the data, the writer used Holmes’s (2013) theory about register. As the results, the writer found 68 vocabulary features, 5 morphological features, and the meaning of the register words are different from the context. The register used by the members of Airlangga Bridge Club aims to make the communication between the members simpler and more efficient. This research is expected to give more information and knowledge for readers and know how the features of register are used in the certain community.
